Fluval FX6 Canister Filter Review: Overkill or Essential?

The FX6 is Fluval's flagship canister filter, rated well beyond what most home aquariums need — which raises the obvious question of whether it's genuinely useful on a mid-size tank or just expensive overkill. We installed it on a heavily-stocked 90-gallon community tank specifically to stress-test the media capacity against a higher-than-average bioload.

The smart pump's self-priming feature worked exactly as advertised — no manual priming required after the initial fill, which is a real quality-of-life improvement over older canister designs we've used. Water clarity improved noticeably within 48 hours, and ammonia readings stayed at zero throughout the test despite the heavy stocking.
