Kurgo Baxter Dog Backpack Carrier Review: Built for Big Adventures

The Baxter is Kurgo's answer to the dog backpack carrier problem: most are either flimsy nylon sacks or bulky frame packs that fight you on the trail. At 3.1 lbs empty and rated for dogs up to 25 lbs riding inside, it splits the difference — structured enough to hold its shape when loaded, soft enough to fold flat in a duffel between trips.

We ran it on a six-mile out-and-back with a 14-lb terrier mix riding for the return leg after he tired out. The aluminum-stay frame keeps the load off your lower back better than we expected from a soft-sided pack, and the mesh ventilation panel on the dog compartment stayed cool enough that he wasn't panting when we finally set him down.

What held up, what didn't

• Sternum strap and hip belt actually distribute weight — no shoulder fatigue past mile four
• Side pockets fit two 16 oz water bottles plus a collapsible bowl with room to spare
• Zippered dog compartment has a safety tether clip so a nervous rider can't launch themselves out

It's the first carrier we've tested where the dog looked more relaxed at mile five than the owner did.

Where it fell short

• Top-loading main compartment is awkward to pack quickly at a trailhead
• Ventilation mesh shows wear after repeated bramble contact

For day hikes and multi-mile trail use with a dog under 25 lbs, the Baxter earns its price. If you only need it for the occasional vet trip or short errand, a simpler sling carrier will save you money.
